How to Play Long Haired Country Boy Intro Solo

This is such a great song and fun to play. This lesson is based loosely off of the Travis Tritt version of this song.

Travis is playing in drop D tuning. I will show you how to play it in standard tuning. Which most beginner guitarists use standard tuning.

The intro starts off like a blues turnaround. To learn more about blues songs click this link. Here is the intro of the song.

You start off with a capo on the 2nd fret. Then from there the capo is the same as the nut of the guitar. So when I’m discussing frets. That’s the count of the frets from the capo.

Start on the 5th fret of the 4th string. Pick frets 5, 6, and 7, on the 4th string. (5th fret from capo). Then you are going to place your 3rd finger on the 4th string at the 7th fret. Place your pinkie on the B string. The second string, at the 7th fret.

What you want to do is hybrid pick the strings. If you are not familiar with hybrid picking. What you do is use your pick and your fingers at the same time.

So with your third finger and pinkie in place. On your fretting hand. At the seventh fret. What you will do is pick the 4th string with your pick, and use your finger to pick the B string. I use my third finger to pick the B string.

You want to pick the 4th string and then 2nd string two times. One after the other, and then pick the 4th string again.

After picking those strings you are going to move down half a step. Which is a fret towards the headstock. Then you want to pick the 4th string at the 6th fret.

More of the Intro to Long Haired Country Boy

Next move down a half step to the 5th string. And play the 4th and 2nd strings, one at a time. The same as you did on the 7th fret. Then you move up one more fret.

Finally you will end up with your second finger on the 4th fret of the 4th string. With your first finger on the 3rd fret of the 2nd string. You want to pick the 4th string one time, and the 2nd string one time.

This may be a little different if you are not used to blues turnarounds. So I would recommend breaking it down and taking your time. Until you can play it smooth. Then move on to this next part of the song.

A little recap: You are using your third finger and pinkie on fret’s 7,6,5, When you get to the 4th fret you switch fingers. Now you play the 4th fret with your 2nd finger, and your first finger is placed at the 3rd fret of the B string.

Using the reference of your 2nd finger. The next part of the intro starts on the 5th fret. Which is one fret back from that 2nd finger. What you want to do is place your first finger on the 4th string at the 5th fret.

Pick the 5th string, then place your third finger on the 7th fret of the 4th string, and play the 4th string. Pick that finger up off the fret. Leaving your first finger on the 5th fret of the 4th string. Pick the 4th string again.

After that you are going to move up a string, to the 5th string. Stretch that third finger over to the 7th fret of the 5th string. Then pick the 5th string. Right after that you are going to play the 6th fret, and the 5th fret. It’s pretty quick, frets 7, 6, 5 all on the 5th string.

Long Haired Country Boy Lyrics

People say I’m no good crazy as a loon. I used to get stoned every morning
And I still like drinking in the afternoon.
Yeah, kinda like my old blue tick hound. I like to lay around in the shade.

Ain’t got a whole lot of money, but I damn sure got it made. And I ain’t asking nobody for nothing. If I cant get it on my own. If you don’t like the way I’m living. Why don’t you leave this long-haired country boy alone.

Well the Preacher mans talking on the T.V. Cutting down my rock and roll.
He wants me to send a donation. Says he’s worried about my soul.
Now Jesus walked on the water. And I still believe that’s true
Sometimes I think that Jimmy Swaggerd might
Want to do a little walking too.

And I ain’t asking nobody for nothing. If I cant get it on my own
If you don’t like the way I’m living. Why don’t you leave this long-haired country boy alone.

Well a poor girl wants to marry. While the rich girl wants to flirt.
Yeah the rich boy goes to college. While us poor boys go to work.
A drunkard wants another drink of wine.

And the pledge of legions needs another vote.

Bin Laden thinks he can bring us down, Boys and Girls that’s a damn good joke.
cause I ain’t asking nobody for nothing. If I cant get it on my own.
If you don’t like the way I’m living. Why don’t you leave this long-haired country boy alone.

Yes, If you don’t like the way I’m living. Why don’t you leave this long-haired country boy alone. Source
